Biography

Marta Kowalczyk has been on the retainer since 2018 and lives in Warsaw, three hours from the river she spent four years photographing. Borders was her brief, not the desk’s: a river that has been a frontier for eighty years and a bridge that has been open for twenty.

She closed the project herself in 2023, on the grounds that the pictures had started repeating themselves. The desk regards that as the most useful sentence a photographer can say, and she is now on the commissioning panel.
